The Cohen lab has welcomed two new postdocs, Dr. Jelena Lujic and Dr. Maria de la Mercedes Carro. Mercedes joined the lab in October from Argentina where she was studying sperm cryopreservation in cattle. Mercedes also spent part of her PhD research time working with Marilyn Renfree in Australia, where she worked on marsupial biology. Mercedes will work on the role of Argonaute proteins in regulating gene expression and silencing in the germline. Jelena is originally from Serbia, but was a Research Fellow Szent Istvan University in Hungary before coming to Ithaca in February. Jelena has many years’ experience in reproductive biology in fish species, including cryopreservation of the germ line, cell culture, and spermatogonial stem cell biology. Jelena will lead the Gates Foundation work in the lab that focuses on identifying new methods for male contraception.
